Self-Esteem and Believing That You are Beautiful

As we began studying the Romantic Unit in the literature class, Professor Brady put two quotes up on the board during one of her lectures. One of them was the quote, “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder” (Anonymous). This quote touched me because there are a lot of problems with young girls and their self-esteem in today’s society. The young girls see all the edited pictures of the supermodels and the young girls think that they have to be the same. It is hard for young girls when they try to find their place in the world and figure out who they are. I know that I had a problem with that. I did not think that I was as pretty as all the other girls in my class. I did not have many boyfriends like everyone else did.  I never understood that quote until I meet my husband. He was the one that started to tell me that he thought that I was beautiful. To be honest, I did not believe him in the beginning. He continued to to tell me and he also said that even if I did not believe him that I should realize that it was up to him to decide. After a while, I started to believe him and my self-esteem started to grow.  I hope that all the young girls find someone just like I did that tells them that they are perfect as they are. There is nothing that they have to change to be accepted in the world.
